It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Mauritania to the north and east, Mali to the east, and Guinea and Guinea-Bissau to the south.

Welcoming, warm and hospitable, it is a crossroads of ethnicities and traditions, land of Wolof, Pulaar (Fulani pastoralists and Toucouleurs of the Senegal River Valley), Soninke, Jola of Casamance, the Serer of Sine and Mandingo, all contributing to the cultural richness of the country.

Language

  • French is the official language.
  • Are spoken, according to ethnic groups, Wolof, Fula, Serer, the Madringue, Soninke and Diola.
  • English, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, German, Russian and literary Arabic are also spoken by many Sénagalais.

Senegal is aligned with the Greenwich meridian. Local time is that of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)

Entry requirements in Senegal

  • The passport must be valid (not expired in a minimum of 3 months after the end of the stay in Senegal).
  • Nationals of Member States of the European Union, the ECOWAS countries, the United States, Canada, Japan and some North African countries do not require visas.
  • For other countries, participants should check with the embassies, consulates and other representations of Senegal in their country to obtain the visa.
  • It is recommended to take out travel insurance to cover your stay in Senegal. The vaccination certificate must be updated and it is mandatory for the traveler.

Vaccination and Health

  • Vaccination against yellow fever is required for entry to Senegal.
  • It is strongly recommended to consult your doctor before your trip, the health status of each traveler may require a different preventive treatment.

Service to Goree Island, located 2.5 km off Dakar, is provided by boats whose management and operation are entrusted to the Directorate of Autonomous Port of Dakar through the Maritime Liaison Dakar-Goree (LMDG).

No reservations, the ticket is taken on site. Journey time: 20 minutes.
